Writing fiction changed the way I teach. A raga is a story to me now, with a beginning, a middle and a place it wants to rest, and when I hand a student a bandish or a chord change as narrative rather than as rules, they remember it. The Rose of Silver Leaves, the first of the three novels, is where that habit really started.
