The working community refuses to accept this when an abandoned tool basket surfaces in the black mud, near disciplined bronze-shod footprints and a layer of unburnt, cobalt-edged ash. The evidence suggests something organised. An independent private investigator — analytical, clinically disciplined, guarding a second sight — is brought in by the Law Guild, and her inquiry grows more complex when she is paired with an unyielding dwarven Inquisitor who understands justice through procedure and evidence.

The book is structured around investigation rather than a simple battle between good and evil. Evidence, documents, footprints, industrial processes and witness accounts all become part of the narrative. It brings together several connected forms of speculative fiction: dark fantasy (a world shaped by fear, power and hidden violence), forensic mystery (a case built from physical clues and records), detective fiction (an investigator working against concealed motives and institutional resistance), science fantasy (ancient civilisations and elemental suns alongside advanced energy systems), and social fantasy (class divisions, labour, privilege and the cost of industrial progress). The central conflict is not located in a distant wilderness but embedded in the systems that organise labour, energy, movement and public memory. Following the clues through marsh loading platforms, forged permits and high-temperature furnaces, the investigators uncover something disturbing: someone among the high-born elite may have found a way to reverse ancient bedrock channels and drain vital energy from living bodies to sustain failing machinery and protect production quotas.
The meaning of the clay
Clay carries several meanings within the world of the novel — the physical landscape, the ancient foundations of civilisation, and the traces left behind by human activity. Ledgers can be altered, permits can be forged, and official explanations can be repeated until they seem credible. Clay, however, retains impressions: footprints, tools, ash and the physical evidence that institutions may prefer to ignore. This gives the title a wider significance. The "toll" is not only a price paid by individuals; it is the cost demanded from vulnerable communities whenever power is protected at the expense of truth. With a significant celestial alignment approaching and the World Council watching, the case becomes a race against institutional silence, commercial fraud and the next planned harvest.
