Here is what I charge at the Jalandhar studio. Prices are per learner, and your demo class is the one visit you make before classes begin.

Sur, sargam and the instrument itself

The harmonium is a wind instrument with a keyboard. The right hand finds the notes; the left keeps the bellows honest. If you treat it as a small piano you will miss the point, because when the air is uneven the pitch wobbles and the singer has nothing to rest on. So we begin with the air: how much pressure a phrase needs, how to refill without a gulp in the sound, and how to hold a drone, usually Sa and sometimes Pa, steady while the melody moves over it.

Sur comes first, not as a side topic. I have you match the scale to a tanpura or to the instrument’s own Sa, and then sing the note before you play it. A harmonium player who cannot sing their own sur teaches the ear to follow the reed instead of leading it. Sargam follows: Sa Re Ga Ma in even time, then in simple tala, then as palte that later turn into raga phrases. I introduce notation only when it helps you remember a line. The ear stays in charge.

The keyboard layout is the same as a piano’s, which is why some of my students arrive from keyboard classes. That helps you find notes quickly. It does not help with touch: there is no velocity, no sustain pedal and nowhere to hide a late change. Every chord has to be placed, and every bellows stroke has to last the phrase. That discipline is why I teach harmonium as its own subject rather than as an add-on to piano.

Bhajan, ghazal, film and singing with the instrument

Most of my students do not come for concert repertoire. They come because they sing, at home, in a gurdwara or mandir, in a small gathering, and they want the harmonium to hold them. So I teach accompaniment as a craft: a left-hand bass that marks the tala without thumping, a right hand that outlines the melody and then gets out of the way, and a feel for when to fill a gap and when to leave it empty.

Bhajan and shabad work sits on a slow, even pulse. You will learn to keep the bellows through long vowels, to change chords on the sam, and to follow a sangat that speeds up without losing Sa. Ghazal asks for a lighter hand: fewer notes, more space, and the patience to sit on one chord while the singer ornaments. Film songs, the ones families actually request, I teach with the same ears: I write the progression out, we choose the key for the voice in the room, and you practise singing the mukhda while the right hand stays simple enough to survive a nervous first take.

Singing with the instrument is a normal goal here, not an advanced extra. I train the right hand until chord changes run without looking, and then the voice takes the line it already knows. Even students who only want to accompany somebody else sing in my class, because an accompanist who cannot hear the next swara will always be half a beat late.

Who the classes suit

Children from age seven who can sit with the box on their lap or on a low table; complete beginners; adults who already sing and want a portable instrument; classical vocal students who need a practice partner at home; and players who started on YouTube and now want the bellows and the sur put right. Piano and keyboard students who want Indian accompaniment I send here rather than keep on the piano page.

How harmonium lessons work

A one-to-one lesson runs for 45 to 60 minutes, and eight-class plans meet twice a week. Group classes follow my timetable: Monday and Thursday from 10:00 am, or Wednesday and Saturday from 6:30 pm, at ₹1,000 a month. In person we meet at Urban Estate II, Near Taj Food (Dulhan Palace), Jalandhar. Online we work through Zoom, Google Meet or WhatsApp Video, with the keyboard and bellows framed on camera so I can see both your hands.

Physical classes begin after one visit to the studio. Online plans begin with a free 15–30-minute demo class, where we agree days, timings, syllabus and the instrument you already own or still need to buy. I send practice notes after every class, so you know which palta, which bhajan line and which bellows drill to repeat before we meet again.

Fees and schedule

The fee table above is the same one I use on every instrument page. One-to-one physical harmonium is ₹2,500 per 8 classes, twice a week. Group physical classes are ₹1,000 per month.
